If you really need a snapshot of the whole system I wonder if it would be possible to run a partimage client. If this was possible then you could boot the iliad from CF and don't umount/not mount the iliad (is this possible?), then run the partimage client and backup over a network connection to a PC running the partimage server. The partimage front end is very text-based which might be tricky or tedious, but IIRC it can also be used on the command line so it could be scripted. If all of this worked, then it would be possible to create a dedicated package that contains what is needed to boot the iliad, the partimage client and a script to run the backup. Oh, and another to run the restore (no point backing up if you can't restore).

However, do you really need to take a snapshot? Is the reflash and full backup of data good enough?
