Where can I buy a PocketBook Basic 4 (or similar)?
So here is the dilemma.
I would like a reader that does not have wireless capabilities (as in the hardware is not present, a software toggle will not do). My job requires that any electronics we bring must not have wireless capability. Essentially, I discovered that the only reader that meets this criteria (that has been made this decade) is the PocketBook Basic 4. The issue is, I cannot find it anywhere used or new. I am in the United States, so maybe that is why? Any suggestions on where to get this device or possibly suggestions on where I can find something similar? Removable storage is acceptable. Thanks for the help! |

It's surprisingly difficult to find such reader. Reddit thread told me that you can try Woxter Scriba (which is a clone of Yiben P47L): it's 4.7", though, and has no front light or touch screen.

You might have to look at older devices. Perhaps a second-hand Sony PRS?

I found this reader. It seems to not have any wireless capabilities. Little pricey for what it is. But we are gonna try it out!

A Sony PRS-650 would probably be a good (relatively economical) choice. Even if the battery is low, battery replacements are easy to find for this model. A 5" version of the same thing would be the PRS-350 (more of these currently on eBay). Neither of these have WiFi. Not much choice (especially for anything relatively new). Maybe there is a Reader where it can be opened and the WiFi/BT module can be removed. That way you'll get a much better Reader then some old model with a run-down batter worse screen that's most likely low-res, slow, doesn't work well with hi-res images, and other other issues.

I imagine that wouldn't be sufficient to appease the poster's workplace regulations (perhaps they can confirm?). They would most likely want to consult the device documentation to confirm there's no network connectivity.

On a side note, for the chinesium one I picked up. It is okay. The software is sluggish but it does meet the requirements. |

Looking at the PocketBook 615 PCB, it seems as if this green module is the wireless hardware. I can remove them but proving it doesn't have WiFi capability to a FSO is gonna be hard. |

My thirteen year or kindle 4 is still seeing use, and has practically no problems. Eink devices wear out a lot slower than phones. Batteries aren't drained and need recharging every day, while cpu and screen are only under stress whenever page is turned. You may need a bit of luck buying online, but chances are that even really old devices have plenty of life in them.
